What began as a princely-state airstrip in 1939 is now a single-runway domestic gateway, still mid-expansion.
Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport sits at Ujlaiwadi, about 9 km southeast of Kolhapur city, and is owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India. The runway has been extended from its original 1,370 m to 1,930 m, with work under way to reach a full 2,300 m — at which point it will be able to take Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 jets. Today's flights run on a mix of IndiGo's ATR 72 turboprops and Star Air's Embraer regional jets.
The name honours Rajaram Maharaj of the erstwhile Kolhapur royal family, formalised by a 2018 resolution of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Inside, large murals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj greet arriving passengers — a nod to the region's Maratha heritage.
